The Milford Road, SH94, runs about 120 km from Te Anau to Milford Sound and climbs to the Homer Tunnel's east portal at 945 m. From June to October the slopes above it hold snow, and the road's managers close it whenever the avalanche risk rises.
This post covers the 2026 season and what is left of it: how avalanche control works, the chains rule, what the Homer Tunnel is like in the cold months, how closures hit coach days and flights, where to check, and why the booking order matters.
The quick answer
NZTA puts the avalanche season at usually June to October, and the road closes on average about eight days a year, mainly in winter. From June to November vehicles may need to carry chains when signs say so, and passing those signs without chains can cost NZ$750. In early September 2026 the road shut twice in three days for avalanche risk and snow, each time reopening by about 10:00 the next morning. Check the NZTA journey planner or 0800 444 449 the evening before, and book Milford for the first days of your Queenstown stay.

When is avalanche season on the Milford Road?
Usually June to October, on a 17 km stretch from Falls Creek, above the Hollyford Road junction, to The Chasm on the Milford side of the tunnel.
That is how NZTA describes it. The Milford Road Alliance, NZTA working with Downer, forecasts the hazard from snow pits, mountain weather stations and the forecast, and uses controlled explosives to bring snow down before it falls on its own. The rating decides the road: low means open, moderate means open but liable to close at short notice, high means closed.
The programme dates from 1983. Until the late 1970s avalanche danger closed the road all winter, an NZTA release from September 2025 recalls. Today the closures are short, and the NZTA FAQ puts them at about eight days a year on average, mainly in winter. Inside the avalanche zone you may not stop: DOC calls the stretch from the Hollyford Road junction to The Chasm a restricted no-stopping zone.

What did winter and spring 2026 look like?
Short, overnight closures. In early September 2026 SH94 shut on the 2nd for avalanche risk and on the 4th for snow, reopening by mid-morning both times.
On Wednesday 2 September 2026 the Alliance closed the road in the afternoon at a moderate avalanche rating, expecting to reopen by 10:00 the next day after inspections, the Otago Daily Times reported. Two days later snow closed the Hollyford junction to Donne River Bridge section at 17:00, again to reopen by 10:00 the next morning, with MetService snow warnings for the highway (ODT).
That pattern repeats most winters. In September 2025 NZTA described "several recent closures" on the same section for snow and avalanche risk. A closure at 17:00 rarely touches a coach that left Milford at 15:00. A reopening at 10:00 can delay or cancel the day's coaches from Queenstown, which need to be through the tunnel around midday.
Do you need snow chains for the Milford Road?
From June to November, yes, when the roadside signs say so. Rent them in Te Anau and practise fitting them before you set off.
The NZTA FAQ says vehicles may need to carry chains between June and November, and that driving past a chains sign without them can bring a NZ$750 fine. The Te Anau to Milford Highway guide says the same for all vehicles when signed.
DOC's driver tips call winter driving "extremely challenging" from May to September, with ice in shaded corners, and suggest leaving Te Anau from 09:00 when traffic is light. There is no fuel after Te Anau and no mobile coverage on most of the road. On a coach, none of this is your problem: the driver carries the chains. The full self-drive picture is in driving from Queenstown to Milford Sound.

What is the Homer Tunnel like in winter?
Open, single lane, about 1.2 km long and steep down to the Milford side. In winter traffic is light, and the summer traffic lights are rarely the issue.
The tunnel opened in 1953 and runs about 1,270 m through the Darran Mountains. DOC gives its height as about 3.81 m and notes the steep grade towards Milford. Its east portal sits in exactly the terrain the avalanche crews watch.
Recent safety work has changed that portal. A 45 m avalanche and rockfall shelter, an extension of the tunnel on the Te Anau side, replaced the old 35 m one; NZTA announced the $29 million project in October 2023, and engineers WSP say the shelter was finished in April 2024. The same project added an extra queuing lane at the eastern signal to manage winter traffic, new lighting and in-tunnel vehicle detection.
What happens to coach day trips and flights when the road closes?
Coaches cannot get through, so the operator moves or cancels the day. Flights do not use the road, but the storms that close it usually ground small planes too.
A coach from Queenstown leaves early in the morning and needs the tunnel open by late morning. If the road is shut or reopening late, the operator decides, and you get a new date or a refund. Every tour on this site also cancels free up to 24 hours before, so you can move a day yourself if a closure looks likely.
Planes fly over the Main Divide to the Milford airstrip, so a closed road alone does not stop them. But low cloud, wind and snow ground fly-cruise-fly trips more often than they close SH94, and the listings offer a reschedule or refund when that happens. A clear, cold day after a snowfall can be the reverse: road shut until 10:00, sky open. The trade-off in detail: Milford Sound weather and cancellations.
| What closes | Coach + cruise | Fly-cruise-fly |
|---|---|---|
| Avalanche risk, road shut | Cancelled or moved | Can fly if the sky is clear |
| Snow overnight, open by 10:00 | Delayed, sometimes cancelled | Depends on cloud |
| Low cloud and wind, road open | Runs | Often grounded |
| Heavy rain, road open | Runs, waterfalls everywhere | Often grounded |

- Phone: 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 444 449), staffed 24/7.
- On the road: information signs at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford show current conditions.
- Weather: the MetService national parks forecast for Fiordland, and its road snowfall warnings.
- Your tour: the operator's message or the GetYourGuide app. Operators know before you do.
Why book Milford early in your Queenstown stay?
Because a closure usually lasts a night or a morning. With spare days after it, a cancelled tour becomes a moved tour.
Book Milford for your first or second full day, not your last. If the road is shut that morning, the operator can move you to the next day and the rest of the trip barely changes. Holding the seat costs nothing until 24 hours before.
From June to November the same logic applies to anyone planning to fly: hold a coach seat as the backup, and cancel it more than 24 hours out if the forecast for flying looks good. Sleeping in Te Anau also helps, since a 10:00 reopening still leaves a full day from there: see Te Anau or Queenstown.

Coach and cruise with lunch from $151, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before if the road shuts.
